Nowadays we live a whole lot longer and the cells of our skin and eyes need extra protection against radiation. 54% of infrared radiation that reaches us comes from the sun. This has accumulative effects and can speed up degeneration of the retina and crystallin, leading to cataracts.
It also has a photothermal effect that increases the evaporation of tears, causing greater discomfort.
